Who Formed It?
The CNFIU was originally perceived as a means of filling a void in the Independent Canadian Union Movement by a group of Independent Canadian Unions from across Ontario.
The Officers of these unions, in recognizing that educational grants were available to Independent Unions from the Federal Government also recognized the fact that individually, these grants were of no use to the small Independent Union. The amount of the grant to any one Union was insufficient to pay for any educational program, but if the Independent Unions pooled these resources, programs could be launched to benefit all the Independent Unions/Associations. This concept of pooling resources was the seed that gave CNFIU its roots.
Consequently, the Officers of several of the Independent Unions contacted other Independent Union Leaders in Ontario who formed the original group of CNFIU Affiliates. Founding meetings took place in 1979 and 1980, a Constitution was drawn up and accepted by the founding members and the Canadian National Federation of Independent Unions was officially launched on May 10th, 1980. Today, CNFIU has officers and staff representing the following geographic areas:
1. Niagara Peninsula and Golden Horseshoe;
2. London Kitchener/Waterloo;
3. Halton, Peel and the Greater Toronto area;
4. Peterborough and the North;
5. Kingston and the East.
