Vince Vocal Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is awarded in the name of the founding President of the Canadian National
Federation of Independent Unions. Vince Vocal took an idea for an independent union and over
many years of dedication, hard work, and long hours, created a viable structure which benefits

Mary Ferguson Memorial Scholarship
This Scholarship is awarded in honour of Mary Ferguson. On April 2, 2009, we lost a friend, a
dedicated member and strong supporter of CNFIU to breast cancer. Mary was a great advocate for
her co-workers and well-respected among her peers.
Mary Ferguson played a unique role in the history of CNFIU. She was a proud member of Providence
Manor Employees’ Association, the first CNFIU affiliate to become a Direct Charter Local under
CNFIU’s Constitution. This allowed CNFIU to gain status as a recognized trade union under the
Ontario Labour Relations Act in June, 2000. This was a vital step in CNFIU’s progress and in
creating the Union we have today. Mary was the first elected Chief Steward of Providence Manor
Employees’ Union-CNFIU Local 3010...the first CNFIU Chartered Local.
Mary also exhibited outstanding qualities in her role as a Union member and as Chief Steward of her
Local Union. She exemplified the qualities of many leaders in our organization who work tirelessly,
volunteering their time, energy and experience in advocating for others and for the Union. CNFIU
wishes to honour these exceptional qualities and recognize this historical contribution to CNFIU by
establishing the Mary Ferguson Memorial Scholarship.
This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to candidates pursuing a career in any field in
the health care sector.
