The Mission of the Canadian National Federation of Independent Unions (CNFIU) is to promote and
support the collective interests of Independent Unions and workers throughout Canada through
organizing, servicing and education. CNFIU also aims to foster long-term growth and unity by
effective communication, participation and action.
Mandate
The mandate of CNFIU is to assist Independent Unions and CNFIU Local Unions to establish an
organization where local representatives are able to access extensive training and education
in all areas of union representation for the benefit of their membership.

CNFIU offers its members an extensive variety of services and programs. We provide the training,
tools and education to allow Independent Unions and CNFIU Local Unions to thrive in today’s
ever-changing world of labour relations. We provide education in all areas including steward
training, grievance handling, health & safety, workers’ compensation, human rights, basic labour
law, public speaking, leadership, procedures and administration. This unique combination of
services, expertise, tools, education and networking results in success for CNFIU Affiliates
and Local Unions in all areas of labour relations.
Values
CNFIU strives to improve the standard of living for its members and their families. We promote
fairness and respect in the workplace and seek to protect and enforce the rights of employees
while aiming to create a safe and productive environment for our members.
CNFIU is a truly democratic organization. We recognize that democracy is important to our members
and the provisions of our Constitution guarantee it. Members elect their National Executive Board
at regular Conventions. Local Union leaders are elected in accordance with each Local Union’s
by-laws. Our members have a voice in this Union.
